MEDICARE AND INSURANCE : WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU GET SICK IN AUSTRALIA ?

Nobody likes to think about getting sick or having an accident during their dream trip. However, understanding the Australian healthcare system is vital before you land. Here is what you need to know about Medicare and private insurance.

1. The Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA)
  • Australia has agreements with several countries (like the UK, Italy, Belgium, and New Zealand).

  • If you are eligible, you can apply for a Medicare card to get help with the cost of essential medical treatments.

2. Why you STILL need private insurance
  • Ambulances: They are NOT free in Australia and can cost over $1,000 for a single trip.

  • Repatriation: Medicare will never pay to send you back to your home country.

  • Exclusions: Dental, optical, and most specialist visits are usually not covered.

3. Safety Tips
  • Always keep a digital copy of your insurance policy on your phone.

  • Register with a GP (General Practitioner) as soon as you settle in a city.
