G'day Mate! You’ve just landed in Australia, the sun is shining, but your head is spinning with everything you need to do. Don’t panic. After 2 years of living the dream Down Under, I’ve summarized the 3 essential steps you need to complete during your first week to stay legal and start working.
Get your TFN as soon as you land (it’s free!).
Open a bank account to avoid huge international fees.
Buy a SIM card (Telstra or Optus are your best friends).
Step 1: Apply for your TFN (Tax File Number)
The TFN is your ID for the Australian tax system. Without it, you’ll be taxed at the maximum rate (45%!).
Cost: Free.
Where: Only on the official ATO (Australian Taxation Office) website.
Pro Tip: You need an Australian address to receive the letter. Use your hostel's address!
Step 2: Open your Australian Bank Account
Don't use your European card for too long; the fees will kill your budget.
Top Picks: Commonwealth (CommBank) or Westpac are the easiest for WHV holders.
Need: Your passport and your visa grant notice.
Step 3: Get an Australian Phone Number
To find a job, you need a local number.
Telstra: Best coverage if you go to the Outback.
Optus/Vodafone: Great for cities and cheaper plans.
Once these 3 things are done, you’re officially a nomad ready to explore! Next step? Building that Aussie resume to find your first job.
